Afghanistan has experienced significant climate and environmental challenges since the 1970s, with the impacts becoming increasingly severe over the past three decades. Decades of conflict, environmental degradation, limited infrastructure, unsustainable resource use, and the growing effects of climate change have placed communities and ecosystems under considerable pressure.
Across Afghanistan, communities face a range of environmental challenges, including rising temperatures, water scarcity, drought, flooding, heavy precipitation, land degradation, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels and inadequate urban infrastructure. These challenges have a direct impact on livelihoods, agriculture, water security, public health, and the overall well-being of communities.
In response to these challenges, the Environment Conservation Organization for Afghanistan (ECOFA) was established as a non-profit and non-political organization committed to protecting Afghanistan’s environment and improving the lives of its people and communities.
Our work began with a simple but important vision: to improve people's lives by investing in education, sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and practical services that respond to community needs.
Together with colleagues and community members, we initiated rainwater conservation activities in a large, dry, and non-irrigated area located between three districts. Recognizing the critical importance of water for both people and agriculture, we constructed numerous water reservoirs and small dams to capture and conserve rainwater.
As the initiative progressed, we expanded our activities to other provinces of Afghanistan. These interventions helped increase groundwater reserves, restore degraded land, and create opportunities for communities to make productive use of previously dry and non-irrigable areas.
Our work also created employment opportunities during the construction of reservoirs and dams and, subsequently, through activities such as planting and cultivating trees and shrubs around water conservation sites. These efforts demonstrated how environmental restoration and community development can work together to create lasting benefits.
Seeing the potential of these initiatives encouraged us to organize our activities more systematically and establish an organization capable of expanding, managing, and sustaining our work. This led to the establishment of ECOFA – Environment Conservation Organization for Afghanistan.

The achievements of ECOFA demonstrate what can be accomplished when communities are empowered to manage and protect their natural resources. However, significant potential remains to be realized.
ECOFA seeks to build on its experience in water conservation, dam construction, environmental education, and community development by expanding its programs and exploring innovative financing mechanisms, including carbon credit schemes. These initiatives have the potential to empower communities, support sustainable livelihoods, finance environmental restoration, and contribute to global climate mitigation efforts.
This organizational profile presents both what ECOFA has achieved and the opportunities that remain ahead. We believe that through collaboration, innovation, community participation, and responsible environmental stewardship, it is possible to build a greener, more resilient, and more sustainable future for Afghanistan.
